Torispherical heads — also referred to as torispherical dish ends or simply torispherical ends — are commonly used in pressure vessels designed for the storage of liquids and gases. Geometrically, this type of head comprises three distinct sections: a spherical central portion, a straight cylindrical flange of specified height, and a transitional knuckle region that connects the spherical and cylindrical parts. The knuckle features a radius of curvature that is intentionally smaller than that of the spherical section.
These heads can be manufactured from a variety of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and both austenitic and non-ferritic metals that are suitable for cold forming. In terms of mechanical performance, the stress distribution in a torispherical head is less uniform than that of an elliptical head; however, this design offers significant advantages in terms of manufacturability. The forming process is comparatively simpler and more cost-effective, making it a preferred choice when elliptical heads are difficult to produce due to mold constraints.
